In 1934, the Italian Navy requested that Panerai make a robust diving watch that was as readable in low light as the company’s other diving instruments, as they were to be used underwater during the darkness of night. Panerai’s answer: ‘Radiomir’—a new glow-in-the-dark paint consisting of zinc sulphide and radium bromide. The Radiomir became a design icon, and in 1936 it was successfully tested by the First Submarine Group. Panerai quickly progressed from being just a manufacturer of diving instruments to becoming one of the most influential watchmakers in the world. This 2008 limited-edition Radiomir comes in titanium and features an original Minerva movement as well as striking gold hands navigating the dial. Only 150 of this 2008 Radiomir were released—100 for the black dial and 50 for the coffee dial—making it a rare, collectable piece.
